Get ‘em while they’re hottt!

A few years ago, I saw an idea for a 21st century baby book. A mom created an email address for her infant child, then periodically sent little messages, pictures, and updates to that inbox over the years. On the child’s 13th birthday, she gave them the login credentials and let her child look back over years of beautiful memories. I thought this was a great idea, so I jumped into action and did just that. My child has a few more years to go, but I imagine that she will appreciate reading the collection of emails I have sent her over the years in the digital equivalent of her debutante ball. Welcome to the internet, Little One!

Another thing I did, while I was on a roll, was to go ahead and register her domain name. Just firstnamelastname.com. I have no idea if she’ll ever want it, but it was relatively cheap, and most importantly, it was available! We’re in the Wild West prospecting days of the internet right now, and domain names are only going to get rarer and more expensive. Now, although many are already nabbed up, there’s plenty of room out here to stake your claim and plant your flag, so I wanted to get while the gettin’ was good.

Long ago, I was fortunate to snag one of the very first Gmail addresses, while it was still in beta. I was unfortunate to be an idiot high school student, so instead of getting my name, I went with a goofy nickname my friends called me. I still use this moronic email to this day because it’s only six characters long, but now every time I give someone my email, I have to explain that “AliFiz” is short for “Ali Fizzle Fo’ Shizzle,” and Snoop Dogg, I’m so sorry.

All this to say, if you have the opportunity to get a good email or domain for your child, go ahead and get it. Alas, I’ll never get alifisher@gmail.com. Unless the current owner decides to drop it like it’s hottt.

I’ll see myself out.
